Families

Indiana Federation of Families for Children's Mental Health, Inc.

About Our Children

Approximately 6 to 8 million children and youth in the United States have an emotional, behavioral, or mental disorder in need of treatment. This represents about 12 percent of all children in the US Of these, about half have problems that are severe and persistent.

These problems take a number of forms. The children may be self-abusive or aggressive with others; or they may withdrawn, fearful or depressed. Some with the most serious disorders may be out-of-touch with reality and have unusual fantasies or hallucinations.

The cause of these problems are largely unknown, and may vary from child to child. Current research based knowledge suggests that biological, social, psychological and environmental factors are all important.

A wide range of therapeutic, educational and social services are essential to address the needs of these children and their families. Unfortunately, in most states and communities these services are not available. For many, the choice is between very limited outpatient services and restrictive and often unnecessary psychiatric hospitalization or residential care.

Our Principles

The Federation maintains that children and youth with emotional, behavioral or mental disorders....

  • Have unique needs that require individualized services.
  • Must be respected for their rights, preferences, values, strengths, cultural and racial backgrounds
  • Are entitle to full citizenship in their communities
  • Must receive what is necessary to achieve their full potential.
  • Belong with families and need enduring relationships with adults
  • Make positive contributions to their families
  • Must receive supports necessary to remain with their families; out-of-home placement must be considered as a last resort

When children can not remain with their families, out of home placement must be viewed as temporary and as an extension of the family. This treatment must be available close to the child's home and family members must be involved in all decisions regarding their child.

Opportunity For Change

The Federation provides an opportunity for family members to work with professionals and other interested citizens to improve services for their children with emotional, behavioral or mental disorders. We aim to develop a cohesive, enduring union of groups and individuals who will articulately and effectively speak with one voice to policy makers, professional organizations, legislators and the general public solely about the needs of children with emotional problems and their families.

About Our Families

Emotional, behavioral and mental disorders cut across all income, educational, racial, ethnic, and religious groups. They are found among single parent and two parent families in birth, adoptive and foster families.

Within these differences, families have many things in common. They share the need for an accurate assessment and appropriate therapeutic, educational, social and recreational programs for their children. They also need services that support their efforts to help their children learn, develop, and grow within their own homes and communities.

The absence of appropriate child care prevents many families from participating in social and recreational activities, and they experience isolation from friends and relatives. Often, family members must learn to cope with the difficult and demanding behaviors of their children, and may face staggering costs for special treatment, education, or other services.

Mission: To promote the well being and future for children with mental health needs and their families; to focus in on family voice, advocacy, education, early intervention, family supports, systems of care, and transition issues. The ultimate goal is for the child and family to reach their full potential through the intervention of a support network of other families and care providers. These supports will allow the child and family to be empowered and to become their own voice and advocate.
